Band most likely to…
Lions and Tigers and Bears are turning some heads andmaking their mark on the scene
>>THE 411

Here’s one for the kids – Lions and Tigers and Bears (LTB) are very up, and very coming. This trio makes my shortlist of "Calgarians most likely to join the Warped Tour." Definitely "emo"-tional enough to have a healthy all-ages following, LTB is sophisticated enough to have been turning heads in the Calgary bar scene as well.

Chances are if you pay attention to local bar shows, you’ve at least heard their name. LTB have been playing like crazy – opening for Hot Little Rocket, Dojo Workhorse and Gunther, among others

And all of this gigging seems to have paid off. Lions and Tigers and Bears could easily change their name to "Awesome and Good and Bears." Or else, "Tight and Tigers and Slick"… and so on.

They have also become extremely dynamic, with great melodies as well – all apparent on their new disc, Louder than Your Shirt, out June 16 on Lukes Records (the young local label that brought us The Ugly Man by The Pants Situation). Louder than Your Shirt features some slick production, courtesy of Casey Lewis at Echo Base studios.

Lions and Super and Fun will be playing a couple of CD release parties in order to facilitate all age groups of fans – first an all-ages show at The Knox United Church on June 16th and then an 18-plus show at The Hi Fi Club on June 24th.

The owners of The Barfly and T.A. Vern’s have opened a new bar near The Uptown on 8th Avenue S.W. called Vern’s. Vern’s promises to be yet another live music venue that will feature a wealth of local music, with a similar format to both T.A. Vern’s and Barfly. Though they plan to feature a variety of genres, we can expect Vern’s to become the unofficial home of live metal music in Calgary, a welcome proposition since the demise of metal-friendly venues such as Brew Brothers.

Right off the bat, Vern’s is diving into an interesting project, spearheaded by Johnny Incognito – this summer will see five shows showcasing 21 bands. Their sets will be recorded live off the floor and each band will have a song picked for a compilation CD. Some of the bands scheduled for this are BDFM, Dry Fisted, Deadneck Fury and Blind Assassins. No release date has been set yet, so stay tuned.
