| Re: Calgary Downtown Association "Your Generosity is Killing Me" ad campaign.
I find these ads offensive and hypocritical. Although it is true that donating money to charities that assist the poor and homeless is a noble act, the existence of homeless people is a part of what capitalist culture is all about. If we wish to participate in a society that values individual riches over the well-being of all, we must accept that in order for some of us to be wealthy, it is necessary for others to be poor, and the hotter our economy becomes, the more people on the fringes will fall off the edge.
I also get the sense that the primary motivating factor behind the ad campaign is to remove these undesirables from our sight so we can continue to cruise around in our Hummers and remain blind to the consequences of our actions. A more appropriate ad campaign might be to encourage people to vote for political representation that reflects a more caring and supportive society.
