MATTHEW SWEET AND SUSANNA HOFFS
Under the Covers Vol. 1
Shout

· Members of Ming Tea ditch the cocky Cockney front man for a collection of ’60s and ’70s classics.

Using the pseudonyms Sid and Susie, longtime friends Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs dig into the past to tag team some of their favourite songs. Whether they are overhauling the solos on Neil Young’s "Cinnamon Girl" or psyching out The Beach Boys, Under the Covers does a good job of playing to the duo’s strengths.

Hoffs reminds you that the best thing about The Bangles was her voice, and Sweet amps up the songs with his crunchy guitar. The familiarity of songs by The Who, The Mamas and the Papas and The Velvet Underground is the hook, but the killer harmonies sell the album. It ain’t groundbreaking, but it’s a perfect record for your next party.
