Based in North Carolina, Yep Roc has become a haven for all manner of bang and twang emanating from the southern states, adding a healthy dose of rootsy singer-songwriter for good measure. In that respect, American Princes are a bit of a surprise. They have an organic tone that’s consistent with the Yep Roc roster, but between the sandpaper howling of vocalist David Slade, the crunchy post-punk riffs and the steely indie-rock tendencies, Less and Less has considerably more edge than the rest of the catalogue. Drenched in urgency, loaded with off-kilter anthems and spiked with paint-peeling solos, this is an album that revels in pick slides and duelling guitar leads. In fact, what separates American Princes from their labelmates is exactly what makes them so brilliant.
