Jazz Festival Calgary called off
This summer’s festival lineup has taken a hit.

The Jazz Festival Calgary Society has stated that, due to lack of funds, it is unable to run the anticipated 10-day jazz festival this year. According to the society, ever decreasing government funding and "unexpected demands from creditors" forced the society to cancel its lineup and ask its staff to resign.

"We could not put them through the stress of another festival year knowing that the funding support necessary for the success of the festival might not be there when it is most needed," stated the society in a media release on May 15. "Thank you to the musicians who dedicate their lives to the learning and practice of this art form, and to all the music fans who support them through their patronage of events like ours."

The festival was scheduled to start on June 16 and run through to June 27, with appearances by Solomon Burke, Veji, Sophie Milman, David Murray, Gwo-ka and Terrence Blanchard, to name a few.

Following the cancellation, Calgary Arts Development, the city’s designated arts and culture development authority, announced that it will be presenting to the City of Calgary its vision for the future of festivals in Calgary on May 23, along with recommendations with regard to funding strategies and city services based on the group’s research and public input.
