COMEDY
by STEPHEN W. SMITH
Catching up with Mike Tod
He is regularly booked for stand-up comedy performances in clubs in both Calgary and Edmonton. He was last year’s winner of the local FunnyFest comedy search and a runner-up at the inaugural, nationally televised Corner Gas Comic Genius Competition, which landed him a role in an upcoming episode of the television series on CTV.

His name is Mike Tod and he recently celebrated his 17th birthday. To say the Calgarian is an up-and-coming performer with a promising future is a major understatement.

The current Grade 11 student, who can usually be seen twice a week at the Comedy Cave, reports a huge jump in his notoriety since his appearance on the 2006 Comedy Network broadcast of the Comic Genius finals. "It’s weird – once people see that you have been on TV, they take you much more seriously."

While grateful his youth has garnered him much attention as a comedian, Tod looks forward to the day when it won’t be such a big deal. "When it gets down to it, I don’t want to be known as just a teenage comedian. I want to be known as a comedian, period."

Anyone who has seen his inventive, well-varied material knows Tod already has a legitimate comedy game, regardless of the date listed on his birth certificate.
