| Fans of experimental music have something to look out for in Calgary. The Bug Incision is a new label spawned by members of The Bent Spoon Trio. Beginning last summer as a way to put out the Bent Spoon albums, the makeshift label was encouraged enough by positive press to want to do more. The products appear in the form of CD-Rs with handmade covers. In fact, everything is do-it-yourself from the recording to the funding to the distribution.
Next on their plate is "Bug Incision Presents," a series of monthly concerts of improvised playing beginning this summer at various venues (youll be able to check bugincision.com for details). The first event of the series is May 11 at Café Koi with The Bent Spoon Trio, the trio of Eric Hamelin (Hairy Knuckles, Chad Van Gaalen), Jay Crocker and Lyle Pisio (Tokyo Sex Whale).
The series kick-off continues all weekend, as Chris Dadge (Bent Spoon Trio, Phil Withers) unsheathes his new group, Chris Dadge Quartet, at The Beat Niq on May 12 and 13. This free improvisational band features Dan Meichel (Scum De Terre, The Zappa Project) on "reeds and things," Mark Limacher on prepared piano, and Crocker on banjo.
So if you like improv and experimental music, or you just want something to do while youre on drugs this will be a good summer for you.
Fans of Sudden Infant Dance Syndrome (who isnt, really?) will be happy to know that their hard core sister band Prom Date (featuring members of SIDS) will be playing a couple of shows this month an all-ages show on May 13 at the Albert Park/Radisson Heights Community Centre featuring Beija Flor and guests, and a rare 18-plus show at Broken City on May 20 before the DJs start.
