| Re: "Gwyn Morgan is hardly a champion of ethics," by Jeremy Klaszus, Watch Dawg, May 4-10, 2006.
As a consistent reader of Fast Forward, I found the column about Gwyn Morgans appointment to the Public Appointments Commission insulting. This offence is not a result of the premise of the column it is due to the attempt by the writer to use his opposition to a government and its policies to abuse the "human compassion and decency" of a fellow citizen, and to try to convince his readers that the conclusions are applicable.
The problem with this editorial is that, of the stated complaints levelled against the appointment, none of the examples relates to the qualities required for the position. None of them had any relation to Mr. Morgans ability to oversee the transparency and integrity of the process of federal appointments.
Mr. Klaszus says that Mr. Morgan has, in the past, supported the Conservative party financially, doesnt believe in government "monopolies," is a trustee of the Fraser Institute, doesnt support state-run day care and had an opinion on the tactics used by the Liberals in the last campaign. These statements are probably true. However, Mr. Morgans position is intended to be one that implements and oversees a process that avoids patronage and focuses on merit for positions in our bureaucracies, not one that oversees the appointments themselves.
Even Mr. Klaszuss description of EnCanas behaviour in Ecuador doesnt shed any light on his ability to construct and oversee a transparent process.
Using unrelated shock and emotion to destroy the character of an individual in the interest of furthering ones own political beliefs is unbecoming of a supposed journalist and of this publication.
