BEAUTIFUL NUBIA AND THE ROOTS RENAISSANCE
Fere
EniObanke Music

· Bubbling melting pot of worldly pop.

Segun Akinlolu, better known as Beautiful Nubia, is a Nigerian poet and rapidly rising Nigerian musical star WHO has released his sixth album, Fere. Melding traditional Yorubian folk music with the same R&B rhythms and horns that infatuated the early ska and reggae movement, Fere is an album that glides and swirls with sophisticated pop sensibilities, best experienced on "Mama Agba’s Twilight Treat." Spiritually, "Higher Steps" owes a nod to Stevie Wonder’s "Higher Ground," although the horn sections make it more akin to early James Brown.

Both the music and the message of the 1960s are carried throughout the album, tracks like "Eleko’Dere" serve to raise awareness of the corrupt political regime in Nigeria while "Tables Turn" and "Mind of Your Own" question the social justice of increasing global poverty.
