MARK KNOPFLER & EMMYLOU HARRIS
All The Roadrunning
Mercury

· Not so random pairing makes for Dire Straits and an average album.

Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler. It seems like a random pairing at first. One, a bona fide legend of country music – the other, the dude from Dire Straits. And for most of the album, that’s exactly how it plays out. Harris’s personality is so all-encompassing that Knopfler’s contributions become something of an afterthought.

Knowing that All the Roadrunning was seven years in the making, it’s surprising how much it sounds like mere background music. The album occasionally brushes up against being interesting, but never quite establishes itself as such. The pair flirt with the political on "I Dug Up a Diamond" and they show interest in having fun on "Red Staggerwing," but they never sound comfortable enough to commit to either.

As proven by the New York Yankees, you can load a room full of talent, but the results can still be surprisingly average.
