The Back Room commences with three upbeat tracks perfect for any dance party. Solid drumming, hooky bass lines and strong guitar tones stand out in tracks like "Munich," which is unsurprisingly the hit from this album.
Producer Jim Abbiss, who has worked with The Sneaker Pimps, Ambulance LTD and The Arctic Monkeys, is great at giving each instrument its place in the mix and placing the vocals high enough so that people can actually sing along without embarrassment which could be one of the most important but overlooked qualities necessary to any great pop song.
Initially, I was slightly disappointed that the energy established at the beginning wasnt maintained throughout every song, yet after multiple listens it is clear that even the most avid fan of dance floor Brit pop needs a moment to catch their breath. And Editors pull it off. The slower and more pensive "Fall" is a welcome pause. Besides, other tracks build up to "Bullets," a song in the fashion of how The Back Room begins. You might find yourself only listening to a few songs over and over at first, but if you feel like taking a risk, the other eight are worth a go.
