BUBBA SPARXXX
The Charm
Purple Ribbon/Virgin

· Who needs critical acclaim when makin’ mad stacks is the name of the game?

Bubba done won me over on his last outing, Deliverance. Maybe it was the down-home philosophisin’ and simple soul-searchin’ from his bona fide country upbringing, maybe it was his comfortable conversational flow or maybe it was the heavy reliance on Timbaland beats with a backwoods bluegrass tinge. Whatever it was, that platter spun aplenty for months.

Well, looks like three years has taken its toll as The Charm comes off more sparkle than Sparxxx. Don’t get me wrong, the move to Big Boi’s camp isn’t a problem and there are some serious bangers on this album. It’s just obvious that the love the critics had for Deliverance wasn’t enough and this time it’s all about reachin’ out for the brass ring and the bling. Who can blame the guy? He grew up on a dirt road in the Georgia woods a mile away from his nearest neighbour.

While not a bad record per se, and better than your average chunk o’ crunk, Bubba’s now reppin’ the mainstream dirty south styles and aimin’ straight for radio and clubs. It’s too bad because where he used to stand out as unique, he gets lost in the crowd on The Charm.
