>>THE 411

For Calgarians missing The Red Hot Lovers, there’s a new band in town to fill your dirty-rocker needs. The Dirty Roses are the "Use Your Illusions" to The Red Hot Lovers’ "Appetite For Destruction." Led by Jariot Lezz Paul, who once played Robert Plant in a Led Zeppelin tribute band – the band is already getting some attention from Calgarians.

"Sure, I’ve had punches thrown at me because I gave some heterosexual guy a hard-on because my makeup was flawless and he can’t deal," says Jariot of the band’s glam image. "It gets even better when eye-shadow boy kicks the shit out of new-found hard man!"

The Dirty Roses plan to finish up an album this spring, work on new material, and do some touring in B.C. In the meantime, you can catch their sex and their drugs and their rock ’n’ their roll at The Point On 17th on April 14 and The Shamrock on April 15.

Another new band in town that features a face that you might recognize is The Culls. Until recently, Rick Overwater (a.k.a. The Rubber Duck) was the only member of Agriculture Club without a side-project – A.C.’s Gordon Leadfoot fronts The Cripple Creek Fairies, Billy Ray Virus plays in Helvis and Waylon Nelson has The Black Coffee Cowboys.

"Finally," explains Overwater, "I won't always be sitting on my ass at home playing all these gospel-murder ballad-bastardized-bluegrass-outlaw-weirdo-honky-tonk songs I've been writing, with no band alongside me, and the family dog as my only audience… while the rest of the boys are out rockin' and drinking free beer. The bastards."

Help The Culls take out their acoustic/mandolin/lap-steeled revenge on Overwater’s Agriculture Club band mates by catching The Culls April 8 at The Palomino.

Looking for something to do Good Friday (April 14)? Come down to Broken City and support local psych/spacey/post-rockers The Summerlad, who are releasing a new seven-inch vinyl single. In these fast times where the music industry is capitalizing on everything that they can (ringtones, car commercials doubling as music videos, etc.), it’s refreshing to see a band spending money on vinyl – which has no clout whatsoever in the business world. Vinyl, especially the seven-inch, is truly something that is purely for the music fan (and college radio station volunteer DJs). So way to go, Summerlad – I can’t wait to go down and grab some of your seven-inches.
