MATES OF STATE
Bring it Back
Barsuk
· On their fourth full-length, this San Francisco-based couple continue to make beautiful music together.
When a couple channel their love (or lack thereof) into their music, the result is usually something special. And while a lot of folks love Fleetwood Mac for that reason, when it comes to lovers being in a band together, my taste leans towards the indies. There is just something that much more intimate in the music of Yo La Tengo, Erics Trip and Viva Voce.
With their well-worn synth-and-drum combo, Mates of State fall into that category, crafting some seriously solid pop. While Kori Gardners sweet melodies are more than enough to anchor a song, Jason Hammels strained harmonies ensure they never wander into saccharine territory. With lively beats and smirking repetition, the songs bounce with rock n roll abandon yet never forget the importance of hook.
Best of all, whether theyre lamenting lost potential on "Fraud in the 80s" or seemingly barking orders on "Think Long," they always sound like they are having more fun than they ever thought possible. Never underestimate the power of positive attitude.
