CELSO MACHADO
Capivara
Festival
· Heavyweight on the Canadian world music scene makes a pleasant release.
The Capivara (a.k.a. Capybara) is the undisputed heavyweight of the rodent world. While this may seem to be an odd choice for an album title, it is also a fitting one because Celso Machado is himself a heavyweight on the Canadian world music scene a reluctant one, perhaps, who struggles with the concept of "world music," but a heavyweight nonetheless. The Gibsons, B.C. based multi-instrumentalist and singer draws upon the rhythms of his native Brazil (including, most notably, the samba) as the inspiration for many of the songs on this CD. Obviously sentimental, Machado paints a beautiful musical picture of the places, people and things he remembers. Machado manages to keep the audience engaged by mixing things up and including an improvised Kora solo an Italian tammuriata and an experimental soundscape utilizing found items such as seashells and driftwood as instruments. It is a pleasant release.
