EVER WE FALL
We Are But Human
Hopeless Records
· Second album from Portland emo-pop trio offers a twinkly, slightly nasal serenade.
The image of an asthmatic teenager hell-bent on making the track team but never quite being able to keep up kept appearing as the tracks raced by. The energy is there, the youthful motivation and giddy enthusiasm are apparent, but the coach just isnt sure. Memories of early Get Up Kids and even The Promise Ring float by as tinny echoes envelop lyrics delivered barely higher pitched than normal.
Not until the seventh track does the novice quality fully wear off, and with the quirky hooks of "State bird the mosquito" the inherent capabilities of the young runner become apparent. Worth a second look and listen, Ever We Fall manage to convince skeptics after repeated laps around the track and they dont even need an inhaler in the end.
