SLAVE TO THE SYSTEM
Slave to the System
Spitfire Records
· Members of Queensryche and Brother Cane slave to produce a strictly average album.
At first glance, one would assume that a hybrid act consisting of Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield, ex-Queensryche guitarist Kelly Gray, and Damon Johnson and Roman Glick (Brother Cane) would be utterly unreal. Regretfully the album, while good, is not worthy of legend status. In fact, the disc, short two songs, was previously released in 2001 and has yet to make a significant dent in todays rock or metal scene.
Musicianship (while lacking passion) serves as the saving grace on Slave to the System. Many of the songs wield catchy Velvet Revolver-esque guitar riffs while others experiment with softer acoustic sounds, leaving the listener more confused than amused. Tracks include "Stigmata" (a.k.a- horror film spirituality), "Ruby Wednesday" (I guess Tuesday was already taken), "Ragdoll" (The Toxic Twins tried everything, and Im pretty sure they already did this), "Walk the Line," (wait... Johnny Cash?) and "Will You Be There" (OK, yes, we all saw Free Willy, but we dont need to be reminded of Michael Jacksons meaningful ballads 13 years later). The titles have nothing to do with the music. They serve as a distraction and bring to the listeners attention the utterly flawless music they could be listening to rather than Slave to the System. The album, while good, is just that.
