ANNA OXYGEN
This Is An Exercise
Kill Rock Stars
· This CD passed through a couple of pairs of hands before it got to me, and I was determined to better the others by actually getting through the whole thing. How hard of a listen could it be? Anna Oxygen are on the same label as The Gossip and Deerhoof.
I would recommend this CD to only the most hardcore of Yaz fans who think that Yaz could only be improved by lazier sequencing and less interesting vocals.
"Psychic Rainbow" and "Walk," the only tracks that have potential hooks, they are spoiled by boring arrangements and performances that sound dry and uninspired (something that plagues the whole album).
In almost every song, the tracks sound like theyre slightly out of sync, and some of the frequencies border on annoying. Overall, the production was tasteless and missing the mark dance records are supposed to be exciting and tight. This, unfortunately, necessitates good production.
If this album is supposed to be new age, then Anna Oxygen might want to lose the vocoder and kitschy esthetic. At the end of the day, I think This Is An Exercise might have worked as a psychedelic dance album if it wasnt so flat and lifeless.
