MORNINGWOOD
Morningwood
Capitol

· Provocatively named band features the former drummer from Cibo Mato.

Newcomer Chantal Claret sure can sing. Members of Morningwood first heard her belting out tunes at a friend’s birthday party, and on the New York four-piece’s self-titled debut, Claret’s style switches between the breathy-sexy croon that Metric’s Emily Haines uses and the riot-grrl-lite growl that Courtney Love has spent a career perfecting. Lyrics, however, aren’t her strong suit. She’s either repeating one line ad nauseum or merely spelling out her own band’s name instead of finding new ideas to carry the verses.

Musically, Morningwood rely on big, meaty guitar riffs and heavily processed drums. In that sense they’re a lot like a classic-rock version of Garbage. The energy is high and for the most part the studio tricks work, but unfortunately the album doesn’t survive more than a few spins. The Morningwood website says that they sound like "a monster truck having sex with a Bond girl." That would explain all the cheesy sexual references on the album. Ultimately the band is a lot like its name. It can be fun if you’re in the mood, but it can be annoying if you want to get on with your day.
