GOAPELE
Change It All
Sony/ Columbia
· Activist Goapele makes good music, but is it revolutionary?
If the sickly sweet air-brushed album cover doesnt turn your stomach, the over the top socially charged lyricism just might. Change it All is the second release by singer-songwriter-activist Goapele (pronounced Gwah-pa-lay). Combining melodic R & B with head-bobbing neo-soul, Change it All may be nothing more than a platform for the chanteuses socio-political malaise. And although the themes Goapele tackle are timely (poverty, injustice, social crisis, yadda, yadda, yadda) her poetic executions fused with the lounge-inspired rhythms are hardly groundbreaking.
But that said, the woman has got a voice to be reckoned with. Soulfully comparable to the likes of Jill Scott and India Arie, Goapeles soprano flows with hypnotic fervour and charm. After a few listens, you just might find yourself drawn in and hoping for a better world.
