FUNNYFEST TALENT SEARCH
Friday and Saturday nights until March 25
One Eye Jack

The search is on. For all those who have ever dreamed of performing a killer set in New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre and then plopping down in a chair to rap with David Letterman, your road to comedy supremacy could begin right here in Calgary. FunnyFest, Calgary’s comedy festival, is ramping up to its April 28 opening by conducting its sixth annual talent search.

From now until late March, would-be Chris Rocks and Ellen Degenereses (or is that Degeneresi?) will be dropping gags, one-liners and amusing anecdotes in hopes of landing a spot in this year’s FunnyFest performance lineup. More than 40 aspiring comics will perform over the course of the competition.

For the first time there are separate apprentice and professional categories, which levels the playing field for those taking their shot on the mic. FunnyFest executive director Stu Hughes is promising an interesting talent search this year, with comics from L.A., Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Calgary and Lethbridge.

Each night of the search features four competitors, a professional emcee and an experienced headliner, like FunnyFest regulars Dez Reed and Big Daddy Tazz. The entry deadline for new participants is February 28 and only five minutes of original material is required.

So, if you’re that wiseass around the office who cracks people up, or that wedding emcee everybody raves about, perhaps it’s time to step up and prove that you have big-league comedy game.
