THE GOURDS
Heavy Ornamentals
Eleven Thirty Records
· Eccentric ensemble from Austin, Texas serves up a woozy, intoxicating bakers dozen of roots-rock laced confections.
Meandering from the word "go," The Gourds hit the ground running with opening track Declineomete,r which could have been written and sung by Corb Lund. Then the homebrew starts to take effect and the swaying and stumbling begins. From country to zydeco, blues to Tex-Mex, there is no predicting where the album is going to lead you, sometimes heels dragging, sometimes dashing desperately to keep up.
Priding themselves on their ability to mesh banjos, violins, accordions, lyrical oddities and harmonies that range from delightful to tipsy caterwauling, The Gourds manage to convince even the most confused skeptics. The sum of the musical recipe may be gumbo, but each of the ingredients is undeniably tasty. A little hillbilly here, a drunken waltz there, infectious guitar-picking and hypnotizing vocals everywhere.
