One of the perils of being in a Canadian indie rock band is the amount of time it takes to travel across the country. Toronto’s The Awesome Team recorded their self-titled EP with Joao Carvalho from By Divine Right in the spring of 2004, and they are just getting to Calgary now. By this point they have a video in rotation on MuchMusic and several of these songs are being used in movies. The EP gives an indication of some Weezer-inspired rock, Foo Fighters faux metal, and emo influence, but two years down the road, does The Awesome Team even sound like this anymore? Have they maintained their mid-’90s Can-rock sound? Has their lyrical ambivalence caught up to their ability to play? Has the crunchy hook that runs through all their songs matured into a more evolved pop-rock? There’s only one way to find out.
