New and notable films now on DVD
With awards season in full swing and many of the nominated films being released on video, there is really no better time to catch up on your movie watching. But if you’ve already seen Hustle & Flow and Crash there are still a bunch of un-nominated titles to check out.

· The Adventures of Superman: The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (1951-1952, Warner Bros.) – Before the new big-screen version of the man of steel hits theatres in 2006, time travel back to the ’50s and see George Reeves don the tights and cape. Complete with documentaries and cereal commercials.

· The Aristocrats (2005, dir. Paul Provenza, ThinkFilm) – Dozens of the world’s best comics tell a dirty joke. Prudes all over North America press eject on the DVD remote.

· Bubble (2006, dir. Stephen Soderbergh, Magnolia) – Soderbergh shows once again that Hollywood is going to have to play by his rules. His latest low-budget feature about doll factory employees (played by non-professional actors) is being released simultaneously on video, in theatres and on cable.

· Dead Poets Society: Special Edition (1989, dir. Peter Weir, Buena Vista) – Robin Williams gives a great performance in Peter Weir’s tale of friendship and repression at an uppity prep school in the late ’50s. Carpe diem. Fans of Williams should note that Good Morning Vietnam (1987) has also been reissued.

· Junebug (2005, dir. Phil Morrison, Sony Pictures Classics) – This family drama made Roger Ebert’s 10 best for 2005. Features a score by indie giants Yo La Tengo.

· My Date With Drew (2005, Jon Gunn, Brian Herzlinger and Brett Winn, First Look) – When obsession turns to entertainment. One man’s quest to get a date with Drew Barrymore is chronicled on film.

· Sam Peckinpah: The Legendary Westerns Collection (dir. Sam Peckinpah, Warner Bros.) – The master of duster ultra violence delivers The Wild Bunch (1969), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Ride the High Country (1962) and The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970).

· Saraband (2005, dir. Ingmar Bergman, Sony Pictures Classics) – The famed Swedish director comes out of retirement for this story of unrequited love and family tension.

· La Teta Y La Luna (1994, dir. Andres Vincente Gomez and Bigas Luna, Ventura) – Check out a vintage performance from Javier Bardem in a film from Luna, Spain’s master of sex farce.

· The Short Films of David Lynch (dir. David Lynch, Subversive Cinema, WEA) – See some of the early works of visionary American filmmaker Lynch. Includes The Amputee, Six Men Getting Sick, The Alphabet and The Grandmother.

· Thumbsucker (2005, dir. Mike Mills, Sony Pictures Classics) – A quirky festival favourite with an all-star cast. Lou Pucci plays the title character opposite Keanu Reeves, Vince Vaughn, Tilda Swinton and Vincent D’Onofrio.
