NATHAN LAWR
Secret Carpentry
Maple

·Drummer does good with his multi-genre album.

A veritable mainstay on the Toronto music scene (membership duties including stints in Royal City, The Constantines and countless other bands), Nathan Lawr’s earnest shift into solo territory delivers on its promise with Secret Carpentry’s minimalist virtuosity. For the first time inviting other musicians into the studio (his solid touring band The Minotaurs), Secret Carpentry captures Lawr’s gorgeous turn of phrase, both musical and lyrical, live off the floor.

"Shaking Like a Rake" transforms Lawr into a piano balladeer, while "Bring Your Sting" plays in jangly ’80s college rock territory. "Bury Me Blues" comes off as a standard everyone already knows, all handclaps, fuzz guitar and banjo. An able backing musician whose additions to every record he’s ever touched have elevated them from good to great, Lawr’s step into the swoon-worthy frontman position comes as an easy transition.
