URSULA RUCKER
Ma’at Mama
k7!

· Spoken word goddess aims to bring a little poetry into your life.

Philadelphia’s Ursula Rucker is making a name for herself as one of the most dynamic spoken word performers in the U.S. and k7! Records is helping to introduce her to a larger global audience. Backed by rhythms that run the gamut of jazz, R&B, hip hop and world beat, Rucker picks up where Gil-Scot Heron left off, pushing the poetic activist stance forward. With Black History Month and International Women’s Day around the corner, tracks like "Black Erotica," "For Women" and "Libations" seem tailor-made for the occasion. However, to pigeonhole these recordings would do a disservice to the geo-politics and anti-war stance of pieces like "Rant," and the quiet despair and rage of "Spiri-chant." There’s a passion and humanity on this disc that can enrich our daily lives if we are brave enough to rise to its challenge and give them regular rotation in our listening schedules.

We all need more poetry in our lives, so much the better for these times if it’s a knife’s edge pointed at our somnolence.
