KORN
See You On The Other Side
Virgin
·Twisted transition for these moody mallrats.
Its hard to believe that it has been eight years since Korn released their uber-moody mall-core ringer Follow the Leader. Well, the years have passed and the post-grunge wave of rap-metal bands has mercifully passed away with them. Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock CDs clutter the discount bins, and the cornrow and sneaker set have turned their interests away from the once untouchable freaks on a leash.
Posing behind a delightful "Alex in Wonderland" theme, See You On The Other Side is a rebirth of the band in several senses not only is it their debut on the Virgin label after a lengthy love affair with Epic and Immortal Records, but it is also their first album after being left (some would say "left behind") by guitarist Brian "Head" Welch.
However, when it came time to finally return to the studio, guitarist-vocalist Jonathan Davis (a student of mortuary sciences who penned the score for Queen of the Damned), guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer, bassist Reginald "Fieldy Snuts" Arvizu and drummer David "couldnt think of a nickname" Silveria were all onboard and ready to record. Borrowing some much needed street cred from some of the hottest names in hip hop, the band makes good use of producer The Matrix and wisely chose to cast Lil Jon and company to play them in their video for "Twisted Transistor." Even as theyre attacking the state on the hyper-energetic track "Politics," or preoccupied with laying waste to the church on the provocative tune "Hypocrites," the reinvented "groovy" Korn seem way too desperate to prove themselves. Again.
