CARIBOU
Marino EP
Domino

· Dan Snaith rounds out a busy year’s output with this four-song EP, included with the recently released Marino DVD.

Sounding just as hypnotic, pulsating and pristine as any of the songs that made the cut, these unreleased tracks from The Milk of Human Kindness sessions are a tasty addendum to an already heaping offering, and a welcome addition to the Caribou canon.

The EP takes off with the slow-burning opener "The Barn." After two minutes and 49 seconds of restrained flutes, bleeps and bloops, Caribou cranks up the after-burners and lets loose with some characteristically furious drum fills, blasting the song into the stratosphere. It seems Snaith knows the value of first impressions, as this song is easily the most captivating of the four. Next up is "Marino," a twitchy number with haunting synths layered over percussion and spacey electronics, ending with a descending scale bleated out on the horn. "Handelschnapp" is bright and colourful, with softly plucked strings, distorted horns and the frantic sounds of children. Finally, the EP ends with "Sunsesame," another drum-driven piece with what sounds like spooky ghost whispers combined with glockenspiels. It might not be quite as explosive as Human Kindness, but this EP is still a treat for the ears and an absolute joy on headphones.
