Broken City

Jeremy Pollock of Prizefighter Films knows a thing or two about suffering for his craft. Unlike some Hollywood schlockmeisters who grasp their studio’s teats and coax out the requisite resources to make their straight-to-video sequels, Pollock has no one to suckle. He’s had to sacrifice his dignity – and pleasant body odour – to make his mark in moviedom.

"There was one point when we were filming our first short," Pollock recalls, "where a husband and wife character are throwing a bag of dog food into the trash. I literally had my head touching the garbage can to throw more dog food in the air to make it more of an explosion. I got absolutely saturated in dry dog food. It was in my mouth, in my eyes, everything. It’s got that dog food smell, and I thought, what the fuck did I just do this for?"

Apparently he did it just for the anecdote, since Pollock is re-filming that short, combining it with two others, and making a single feature-length release. It takes money to make that happen, and to raise it Pollock’s recruited the Vertical Struts, the Cryptomaniacs and a few other Broken City regulars. It’s no Live Aid, but no one said benefit concerts need to be altruistic.

Harnessing the power of rock is just one step on the path to Hollywood’s ample funding udder, but Pollock already knows what he’ll do once he gets his squeeze. Given a major budget, there’s one project that has been nagging at him.

"The fourth book in (Stephen King’s Dark Tower) series is called The Wizard in Glass, and for me, it would be a dream come true if I was able to direct that film," Pollock admits. "I’m slowly writing a screenplay for it, but it’ll be awhile before it’s finished."
