Getting’ jazzed
Calgary a hotbed of cool jazz over the next two weeks
If you’re looking for one of the best young saxophonists in Canada, catch six-time Juno-Award winner Mike Murley at the University Theatre on Monday, January 23. As an added bonus, Murley will be joined by guitarist David Occhipinti as the pair promotes their second Duologue CD, continuing to explore what can be created when you pair tenor and soprano sax with acoustic and electric guitar. Don’t miss it.

Beatniq’s featuring some of our best local talent over the next two weekends. Watch for the Calgary Jazz Composers Collective on January 20 and 21, and Tyler Hornby’s Quintet on January 27 and 28. The Collective gig will be a live recording of original compositions by Calgary jazz musicians Bob Day, Paul Ashwell, Jim Brenan, Jonathan May and John Hyde. Hornby’s gig will be well worth your attention – this jazz drummer, who counts Max Roach as one of his influences, is equally adept with funk and Latin grooves.

If you’re after something earlier in the day, try Broken City on Saturday afternoons for the Wild Rose Jazz Jam, which is celebrating its first anniversary, hosted by Jeff Drummond, on January 28.

Want something not so jazzy? Billed as "the cowgirl finds her cowboys," Terra Hazelton will be performing with The Polyjesters at Artspace (Crossroads Market) on January 28. The Polyjesters call their music "chunk" – a mix of swing, folk and roots. If you like that blend of styles and influences, you won’t want to miss Sillan and Young’s January 19 gig at Beatniq. A mix of acoustic folk and contemporary urban music, this group is composed of vocalist Johanna Sillan'paa, guitarist Aaron Young, double bassist Kodi Hutchinson and drummer Rob Vulic.
