SOFA SURFERS
Sofa Surfers
(Klein Records)

· Eine kleine nachtmusik, anyone?

With acts like Kruder & Dorfmeister leading the charge, Vienna is quickly becoming the European continental capital of cool. The Sofa Surfers, an Austrian version of Massive Attack, as if by way of New York, have released a number of singles and remixes over the years, but now offer their first full-length record in three years, a dark, moody affair, tinged with rhythm and blues. However, this is not music to walk the night’s dark streets by, but rather the pre-dawn twilight with a touch of hope in the offing. This is courtesy of Mani Obeye’s Curtis Mayfield-like vocals on tracks like "White Noise." Unfortunately, this same feature sounds distinctly out of place on such songs as "Good Day to Die," as Obeye’s soulfulness has no appropriate counterpoint in tension, leaving the album uneven and unsatisfying at times.
