JENNY LEWIS WITH THE WATSON TWINS
Rabbit Fur Coat
Team Love
· Actress-turned-member of Rilo Kiley gets sidetracked by wunderkind Connor Oberst for stunning solo effort.
Loaded with references to Old Testament scripture, heartbreaking lyrics and liquid smooth vocals, Rabbit Fur Coat is proof that Jenny Lewis is a roots diva in the making. Whether she is channelling Neko Case, stripping down songs like Rose Melberg, or amping up the atmosphere à la the Cowboy Junkies, Lewis brilliantly takes old-school styled numbers and ever so gently modernizes them.
If her vocal poise and lyrical prowess werent enough, the album offers a big surprise with a cover of The Travelling Wilburys "Handle With Care." Featuring vocals by Connor Oberst and Ben Gibbard (with whom Lewis traded vocals in The Postal Service), the song is irony-free and all the better for it. Produced by Matthew Ward (a.k.a. Merge Records M. Ward), Lewis has found the perfect person to commit her evocative musical stories to record. Its not often that an album could appeal to fans of Mazzy Star and The Dixie Chicks, but thats exactly what Rabbit Fur Coat does.
