HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA
Begins January 7 at 10 a.m.
CBC
After a year without NHL hockey, the return of Canadas national game has been a solid success. A new level of financial sanity, in the form of a salary cap, has given every team the ability to sign and keep one or more superstars. The rule changes, designed to open up the game and provide more offence, have done just that and many games now have the sort of infectious end-to-end action that keeps people coming out to the rinks.
With Canadians falling in love with the NHL all over again, the time definitely seems right for the comeback of CBCs Hockey Day in Canada. It returns from a one-year hiatus due to the lockout that wiped out last season.
On Saturday, January 7, CBC will present a 13.5-hour-long broadcast that includes a triple-header of NHL games featuring all six Canadian teams. Hockey Day in Canada will also highlight individuals and communities that share a love for the game.
"Hockeys heart and soul lie right in the middle of our communities," says the events host, veteran CBC sports broadcaster Ron MacLean, in a network press release. "From backyard rinks to local arenas that is where you will find Canadas true passion for hockey."
For past Hockey Day broadcasts, MacLean has travelled to remote locations, including Iqualuit, Nunavut and Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. While we dont know where he will end up this year, we do know that the Calgary Flames will be out on the West Coast, seriously kicking some Vancouver Canucks bootie. |
