LADYTRON
Witching Hour
(Ryko)

· I heard you and your band traded in your synthesizers for guitars.

Finally with Witching Hour, Ladytron’s third album proper, everyone’s favourite U.K. synth-rock cyborgs have achieved the as of yet unmatched feat of translating their wall-of-sound live performances into the studio. That the transition comes hand-in-hand with the occasional frontline spotlighting of newly added guitars and live drums into the mix doesn’t necessarily grab points for the anti-synth coalition – most of the finest heavy-hitters here still emerge from the band’s usual bag of tricks and fakery, proving yet again it all comes down to attitude over equipment.

Both "Destroy Everything You Touch" and "Sugar" rank alongside the finest dance floor moments this year (although even Ladytron themselves must realize it’s going to be a bit of a challenge to bump their "Seventeen" off the turntables). It’s hard to shake the overriding disposability of all this stuff, but at least it all comes with more style and sticky melody than their competitors.
