COMET GAIN
City Fallen Leaves
Kill Rock Stars

· Catch a comet.

The final song on Comet Gain's seventh album, City Fallen Leaves, is "The Ballad of a Mix Tape." It's not the first time the near-forgotten format is mentioned on this album, where every song would fit perfectly on a 90-minute audio love letter. Opening song "The Fists in the Pockets" drops the listener right in the action with, "If you're looking for me/if you're looking for me/I'll be down there on the beach." Main Comet Gainer David Christian shares vocal duties with Rachel Evans, and they both sound like they could kiss you or kick you where it hurts in equal measure, sort of like a tougher Pastels. With lyrics that could melt the heart of any tired indie rock fan, this may be the latecomer record of the year. Best experienced on headphones.

5/5
