· Riot grrrls go alt-country.
In the 90s "grrrl" usually referred to howling, tattooed, attitude-filled punk chix, playing their own screeching guitar licks and taking on the world of rawk on their own terms. Straight or dyke, they were not about to be told that only boys can play guitar. In the 00s, grrrl has become shorthand for young women, minus the specific punk ethos.
This compilation is a case in point. The grrrls in question certainly all play guitar, but with one or two exceptions, this is a sweet, low-key, pop/alt-country mix of tunes. New folk festival faves like Anne-Louise Genest, Kim Barlow and Po Girl are here, as well as Coco Love Alcorn (whose songs are regularly featured on The L-Word) and yummy new discovery Yael Wand, while Ash Riot and Hector turn up their amps and bring a bit of tude to the party. For the most part, if youre expecting angst or electric guitars, youll be disappointed, but this is a tasty sampler of new Canadian talent, and there are some finger-lickin good tunes here.
