IBRAHIM FERRER
Ay, Candela
Escondida/ Cuban Essentials

· A look back at the Cuban Nat King Cole.

Although many great Cuban musicians were overlooked by North American audiences for most of their careers, Wim Wenders’s film Buena Vista Social Club brought some of these virtuosos out of the shadows and into the limelight. After a few of these greats released new material, fans began to thirst for some of the classic tracks and the last few months have seen a few Afro-Cuban jazz reissues. While recent retrospective of Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo were lovely, it’s Ay, Candela from the late Ibrahim Ferrer that stands out. Offering material that dates back to the early ’60s, Ay, Candela is a lively and uptempo affair. Where many of his contemporaries revelled in moody longing, Ferrer seems to deliver his songs with a wink and a smirk. Known for turning up the heat, he follows suit with the charm, allowing this collection to live up to its Cuban Essentials label.
