| Re: "Alberta fights plan to regulate pollutants," by Amy Steele, News, November 10-16, 2005.
Amy Steeles article about the Albertan conflict with the Liberals global warming agenda was less than thorough.
The reason Alberta wants control of environmental policy is because the federal government plans to classify carbon dioxide as a toxic pollutant. This would theoretically allow them to throw taxes on farting cows, rotting compost heaps or even you, as you breathe in and out while reading this article. This wont happen, of course, because the real taxation target is private sector industry. The Liberals cant steal Albertas oil like they did 25 years ago instead, they are introducing sneaky taxation measures to expropriate money from companies developing Albertan oil.
I dont have space in a letters column to detail the whole Paul Martin, Maurice Strong, Power Corp. conspiracy, but the short version is that the Kyoto scam is a wealth transfer scheme dressed up in junk science.
Real environmental policy (like most government policy) works best when reduced to a local level. This ensures that the municipalities can determine, on a case-by-case basis, what policy best meets the needs of the community. Rational environmentalists need to reintroduce and repopularize the old slogan, "Think globally, act locally."
If Steele broadened her resource material beyond leftist mouthpieces like the Sierra Club and the Pembina Institute, she could provide readers with a more credibly balanced account of environmental policy in Alberta.
