Local punks call it quits
>> THE 411

Belvedere are breaking up. After 10 years of fast melodic punk, it’s down to one last show at the Warehouse on Saturday, November 19. Ten years is a very good run for a Calgary band, especially such an active one. They’ve toured extensively – covering Canada, the U.S. and Europe (including a spot on the Vans Warped Tour). They have worked with some famous producers, sold thousands of copies of their three albums, and gained some serious fans along the way.

It’s sad to say goodbye, but it’s classy of them to go while they’re in their Destroyer period and not their Hot In The Shade period. Very dignified of them. Perhaps in 20 years or so, they could be persuaded to reunite, in face paint, with hairy bellies spilling out through their black unitards. Only time will tell.

There are now more indie labels in Calgary than there are bands. Sometimes an independent record label means a cute web address, a CD burner and a whole lot of construction paper and staples. In the case of Cardboard Box Records, the label is made up of one splintered band.

The label has a roster of nine bands, but they’re almost all the same group of people, taking on different handles depending on which member is in charge of that project. If you look closely at the credits of the recordings, the same names keep coming up – now that’s efficient use of talent. Broken Social Scene – eat your heart out.

Having said all that, each group has a very different sound from the others – from rap to flamenco, indie-pop to electronica. To listen to all of these Cardboard Box groups, you might not think they were even affiliated, let alone share many of the same musicians. Don’t miss the Cardboard Box Records showcase at The Liberty Lounge on November 24, featuring The Boygirls, Remote Kid, Disposable Cars, Jaime Cullen, and Figment Seadog.

Looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon? Broken City has rockabilly legend Ronnie Hayward hosting a free open jam. People who enjoy things like brunch, beer, rockabilly and open jamming just may enjoy this. People who enjoy all of these things at once will love it.
