BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME
Alaska
Victory Records
· At their concerts, just like in Alaska, men outnumber women 10 to one.
Sly, methodical and utterly committed to the technical side of black metal, Between the Buried and Me represent the latest event in the ongoing evolution of vocalist Tommy Rogers and guitarist Paul Waggoner from their previous incarnation as the Raleigh thrash-metal quintet Prayer for Cleansing. It would seem that three albums into their new persona the duos prayers have been answered. Alaska is as cold, clear and unforgiving as the name implies.
The terrifying opening chords of "All Bodies," the soaring silken melodies of "Breathe In, Breathe Out" and the crashing dissonance of "Roboturner" demonstrate the bands many strengths. Most significant of these qualities is their obvious desire to push the creative envelope beyond what one might normally expect of their genre and transport the listener to another world. As attractive as this might seem, you would still be well-advised to brace yourself for an intense experience in Alaska. Between the Buried and Mes primordial rhythms and acidic vocals could possibly blow your subwoofer, flood your senses and pummel your ears into toxic submission.
