BELLINI
Small Stones
Sonic Unyon/Temporary Residence
· Trans-atlantic quartet create enjoyably difficult music.
Drawing favourable comparisons to Shellac and the Jesus Lizard, Bellini combine equal parts old-world artiness with new-world muscle. Sicily-based couple Giovanna Cacciola and Agostino Tilotta carry the bulk of the songwriting duties, while Matthew Taylor (ex-Romulans) and Alexis Fleisig (ex-Girls Against Boys) hold down the rhythm section. Sounding at times like Sonic Youth at their most morose, Small Stones is a half hour of edgy dissonance. Cacciolas vocals alternate between whimpering and vulnerable, and aggressive and rapacious. The rest of the band sounds like theyre about to fly off in a dozen different directions under the guidance of producer Steve Albini. For those who thought that Touch and Go was becoming a little too poppy, Bellini offer a long-awaited and refreshing drink.
