ROLLING STONES COVER NIGHT
Friday, October 28
Liberty Lounge (MRC)

For more than 20 years, CJSW 90.9 FM has been broadcasting from the University of Calgary thanks mostly to money raised during their annual funding drive. At the same time that the station makes on-air pleas for cash from October 21 to October 28, they host a series of live events to get people together (and, of course, to raise money).

In addition to a special-edition of Flashlight at The Hifi Club (October 21), the "Live Jive" hip hop event at The Cherry Lounge (October 25), an all-ages punk show at the Underground (October 23) and a DJ melting pot at the Warehouse (October 22), CJSW continues the tradition of wrapping up their funding drive with an evening of cover tunes. Past cover nights have gone down in Calgary rock infamy, and this year should be no exception. In direct competition with a show the same night at the Saddledome, local bands will be paying tribute to the Rolling Stones.

Bands on the bill include The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, The Dino Martinis, Les Pants Situation, Pete M and the A Team, The Incandescence, Lee Shedden and the Danbury Shakes, Woodpidgeon and The Collapse for some participants, this event is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

"Our goal is to live out our teenage fantasies of wanting to be in the Stones and pretending we are the Stones," says Pat McGannon of The Dino Martinis. According to him, however, just being a fan isn’t enough to do them justice.

"In most bands people follow the drummer. In the Stones, they follow Keith Richards – Keith sets the tone and feel of the song…. The guy is all about the riff, he’s not about the solos. We picked a few songs that have horn arrangements and are going to try to emulate them as close to the record as possible. We are even bringing in a harmonica player, Richie Pollock, to join us on a few songs."

However, some bands aren’t necessarily planning to pay respect to the Stones directly. The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir have chosen to play covers of songs that Mick Jagger and company once covered themselves.

"It fits in with our band. It’s what we do," says Bob Keelaghan of The Agnostics. "The Rolling Stones played songs they didn’t write. We play songs we didn’t write, ergo we are the Rolling Stones of Calgary."
