· An open letter.

Dear Liz,

I’m writing to tell you that I’m ending things between us. Not because you’re doing Gap ads, because I think they make really great basics. Not because your last album was a mainstream departure used to score romantic teen movies, because I respect your right as an artist to try something different.

When we spoke about how the critics panned your self-titled release in 2003, I admired your gutsiness to talk about their comments and face the music, so to speak. But what I didn’t expect was that you would abandon all your sardonic wit and your slightly bitter yet completely appealing attitude towards the men in your life and start singing clichéd acoustic love songs about frogs and princes.

When I listen to your new album, I can’t help but cringe and wonder what went wrong. Did your label force you to do it? Have you truly evolved into a shiny, happy person in love with love? Because I can’t relate to you anymore. You will always hold a special place in my heart, but it is in the archives because your music no longer speaks to me. You might want to check out Kathleen Edwards or Martha Wainwright – I’m hearing them regularly now on my stereo and I think you would like them. They are filling the void you’ve left behind.

Take care (1/5)

LENORE HUME
