ROGUE WAVE
Descended Like Vultures
Sub Pop

· If The Beatles signed to Sub Pop.

Comparing anyone to The Fab Four can be a touchy move since nods to The Beatles can come from the great (Crowded House) as easily as they can from the less-than-fab (Beatles Regrooved). Zach Rogue and his bandmates channel the finer points of Paul McCartney’s pop sensibilities into an album that updates the sound with an appealing mid-fi approach. Descended Like Vultures is more diverse and has more immediate hook than Rogue Wave’s 2004 debut, but when you dig deeper there is still enough studio trickery and musical accents to allow the album to stand up to repeat spins. Best of all, the band wraps everything up in a tight little package ensuring that they never succumb to the indulgence trap that so many other bands (including The Beatles) find so hard to avoid. It’s not Abbey Road or Rubber Soul, but at times Descended Like Vultures is better. Rogue Wave ably scour the saccharine sheen off classic pop-rock with their indie sensibilities.
