Inner Surge are busy little metalheads these days. Their "Retribution Song" will be on the soundtrack for Cabras, a horror film scheduled to come out in 2007. Theyre also in the midst of completing a new album called Signals Screaming. Rumour has it that theyre even planning to show off a new member (tee-hee) at their October 27 show at The Underground. Thats how you do it people, keep busy, keep the momentum up.
Or, just F-off for a year! Thats what Guerrilla Funk Monster did. Their October 27 show at The Gateway (at SAIT) will be their first performance since June 2004. Wait a minute, thats even more than a year thats like
this many days.
I see two scenarios for their comeback gig. Scenario one: they are just as good as they ever were. Scenario two: theyve become fat, bitter and out of touch. Either way it should make for the kind of show that I want to see.
Heres something unexpected local heroes The Dudes have begun a weekly residency at Broken City. "Well try it for at least October/November," says the clubs promoter Craig Evans. "We were looking into doing a house band type residency thing, but didn't really think of The Dudes as such. It wasn't until The Dudes themselves brought it up that it happened. The Dudes are good to try it on because they have a pretty good, consistent draw and theyre able to accompany a variety of other bands." So if youre a fan of The Dudes, show up at Broken City
every Tuesday
forever.
Speaking of house bands, Damo Suzuki (of the legendary Krautrock-space rock band Can) is playing at Broken City on October 23. His band (or "sound-carriers," as he describes it) is mysteriously comprised of local musicians, including members of The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, Günther, The Bent Spoon Ensemble, Vailhalen, Forbidden Dimension, The Corta Vita, Chad Van Gaalens band and many, many more. Show up and check out the guy who inspired all of those Constellation Records bands that you like so much.
New Calgary band! The Cryptomaniacs have only been around since April, but they have already toured more than most Calgary bands. "We really wanted to go to California, and Washington, and Oregon, and B.C., so we did," says drummer Ian Manhire. "We booked all of our own shows, hopped in our van and went on an amazing adventure. It was a dream."
What do The Cryptomaniacs sound like? Theyre rock n roll and they have songs called "Graveyard Love" and "Vampire Bar Fight." Thats all you really need to know. Theyre playing at the Bamboo Tiki Lounge on Halloween night. Perfect.
Oh, and dont forget to pledge to CJSW 90.9 FM this week for their 21st annual funding drive.
