Rectangle recognizes Calgary gem
Pressure Kill Common Style impress Edmonton big shot
>>THE 411

Oh, and another problem I have with Edmonton – they steal our bands. Edmonton scenesters Rectangle Records (home of Whitey Houston and All Purpose Voltage Heroes) has taken a shine to one of Calgary’s hottest new bands. Pressure Kill Common Style (PKCS) has started a relationship with the northern label.

"I’m not stealing (Pressure Kill Common Style), I’m facilitating their growth," rationalizes Rectangle’s owner Mike Scorgie. "I’ve decided to look outside Edmonton to find more bands that I want to work with. I’m loving the Alberta scene right now."

The two parties met recently at Edmonton’s Sidetrack Café, where PKCS’s first Edmonton performance captivated Scorgie enough to inspire him to want to release first an EP (slated for December) and later a full-length. Pressure Kill Common Style will charm you, as well, on October 11 at The Hifi Club.

Although Scorgie insists that this is his first signing of a Calgary band, rumours have begun to surface (from me) about Scorgie also being responsible for stealing former Calgarian Paul Coutts (The New 1-2, The Primrods, XL Birdsuit) and coercing him into moving to Edmonton and forming Twin Fangs (also on the label’s roster). Your favourite band could be next, so watch out!

The third annual Western Canadian Music Awards are coming up in Vancouver from October 20 to 23 and our Calgary bands are so in there. A few nominations for us – Lorrie Matheson for best alternative album, Amos Garrett for best blues recording, Land’s End Chamber Music Ensemble for best classical, John Wort Hannam for outstanding songwriter and Wil for best major label artist. A few Calgary bands are playing showcases during the conference, including Falconhawk, Matheson, Hannam, Strada, Vailhalen, Tariq and The Summerlad.

Those who know me, know that I’m never as comfortable as I am when I’m "tripping out." The Art Gallery of Calgary is holding an event on October 15 called Kultura, that will feature three art installations and seven musical acts such as local DJ-producers Rusty Ezard, Wes Straub and Sons Of Aurora. There will be five different rooms that will fuse minimalist electro-soundscapes with other media such as video, canvas print and installations. Indulge your senses! Rich… sinful… decadent….
