| Re: "Get in touch with your campus media," by Jeremy Klaszus, Student Survival Guide, September 8-14, 2005.
I wanted to write in response to Jeremy Klaszuss article on campus media. Unfortunately, Mr. Klaszus forgot to mention another long-standing organization: the New University Television Society (NUTV), which is based on the University of Calgary campus. We've been producing work since 1983 and were incorporated as a non-profit society in 1991. Famous alumni include former Calgary-based indie feature director Michael Dowse (Fubar and Its All Gone, Pete Tong), local indie film director-producer Sandi Somers (Screaming Fish) and others.
NUTV is currently launching many new initiatives, including programming an on-campus broadcast schedule (Turn Up the Volume: student primetime from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday) as well as taping events such as Movies That Matter at Epcor Centre for broadcast on campus. A television society is a unique organization as members are expected to create programming from concept to shooting to a finished product all for only a $10 per year membership. Providing free access and training to students is no small feat in today's money-driven market. I believe this information would be of interest to Fast Forwards readership.
Michelle Wong,
Executive director, NUTV
