In the Dog Kitchen: Great Snack Recipes for Your Dog
Julie Van Rosendaal
Blue Couch Books, 160 pp.
Next time you spoil your family with your famous peanut butter and honey cookies, be sure to bake an extra batch for your pooch. Yes! Dogs adore freshly baked treats just as much as us two-legged folk!
From the Calgary-Vancouver author of cookbooks One Smart Cookie and Grazing, Julie Van Rosendaal shares 88 of her favourite doggy treat recipes in her latest book, In the Dog Kitchen. All of the homemade goodies are simple-to-follow recipes made with easy-to-find, natural ingredients that are safe for dogs, such as cheese, walnuts, molasses, sun-dried tomatoes, oatmeal and sardines (the latter being clearly more appealing to the canine palate).
"Its important to note however that foods that are good for us dont necessarily make healthy choices for our dogs. Dogs have very different digestive systems and nutritional needs," Van Rosendaal writes.
She then outlines some common ingredients that can be toxic and potentially deadly to dogs for example, chocolate, raisins and grapes, coffee grounds and beans, avocados, nutmeg, Macadamia nuts, rhubarb leaves and yeast dough. And because some dogs have food allergies and intolerances, its best to consult your vet if youre worried that dairy products, chicken eggs and wheat may trigger a bout of diarrhea and vomiting.
Every page of In the Dog Kitchen is a treat in itself baked with wonderful dog quotes and photogenic dogs doing what dogs do best (sleeping and acting adorable, goofy and pensive). In my humble human opinion, liver brownies, banana oatmeal and blueberry biscotti, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and crunchy chicken parmesan pretzels sound delicious. Recipes also provide the nutritional benefits of the snacks main ingredients and offer cute ideas for gift presentation.
In the Dog Kitchen shows you how to spoil your dog with wholesome treats made with lots of TLC, without all the additives and preservatives of the overpriced store-bought kind. Van Rosendaals recipes are sure to elicit lots of tail wagging and wet, sloppy kisses. Bon appetit! |
