MARIZA
Transparente
Times Square

· Petite woman, huge talent, third release.

There are some artists who just have to be heard (and if possible seen). Although still at the beginning of her career, Mariza shows all the signs of becoming a superstar. Under the guidance of noted Brazilian performer-producer Jaques Morelenbaum she has virtually redefined the Fado genre with Transparente. The quintessential Portuguese guitar accompaniment remains dominant, but the addition of a string orchestra, accordion and flute give the songs a layered complexity and emotional sensuality that very few fadoistas have achieved. I’m not about to feign astonishment. I expected a wonderful release from Mariza and I got one. I will, however, be astonished if I hear anything as good in the near future.
