JIMMIE DALE GILMORE
Come on Back
Rounder

· Joe Ely both produces and appears on this collection of Jimmy Dale Gilmore’s recordings of his late father’s favourite songs.

It’s eerie how the voice of Texas’s Zen-country son Jimmy Dale Gilmore, usually so much his own, seems haunted by the ghosts of the singers and songwriters he pays tribute to on these 13 tracks. It’s almost as if Hank Williams sings ghostly harmonies to "I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive" and the dual shadows of both writer Harlan Howard and singer Charlie Walker are cast over the notes of "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down."

His father’s impeccable taste meant that these songs were the soundtrack to Gilmore’s Lubbock childhood, and he serves them up with the mixture of spirit and reverence befitting the icons of his youth. The straight-ahead performances avoid fancy footwork while they gather songs like Johnny Cash’s "Train of Love," Jimmie Rodgers’s "Standin’ on the Corner" and Hank Snow’s "I’m Moving On" into a musical bouquet that could be the soundtrack for a course in Roots/Routes 101.
